A new technology is being trialled in Tauranga – aimed at identifying drivers disturbing those living around downtown Takitimu Drive.
The pole-mounted camera near the intersection with Elizabeth street came as a response to complaints from residents living in the area, and is being operated by the NZ Transport Agency.
A first for New Zealand, the camera only photographs trucks with noisy engine brakes.
National Road Carriers’ spokesman, Grant Turner, told Hawkes Bay Today that engine braking in built-up areas with a speed limit of 80km/h or less was unnecessary, upset residents and destroyed community goodwill.
