Heavy vehicle restriction on Kennedy Bay Road

From June 29 the Thames-Coromandel District Council (TCDC) is restricting heavy vehicles weighing more than 6000kg, and wider than 2500mm, from an area on Kennedy Bay Road where there a washout is further deteriorating due to heavy rainfall.

The washout site on Kennedy Bay Road is closest to the Coromandel side of the Tokatea summit.

The weight and width restriction means that vehicles larger than these will no longer be able to travel past this site, but TCDC says that cars and light trucks will have continued access to this section of road.

“We have to put such a restriction in place on vehicles larger than 6000kg and 2500mm wide to maintain road user safety until constructing permanent repair works,” says TCDC Roading Manager Matt Busch.

“We will also be constructing an asphalt bund to ensure vehicle tracking paths are as far away from the slipped edge as possible as well as continuing to monitor the site daily for any further signs of instability,”

“We are working on the best option for repairing the road long-term as fast as possible and will have a further update as soon we make a decision. We want to thank everyone for being patient while we work through the road reinstatement options,” says Busch.
