Heavy vehicle operators are expected to see significant reductions in Fire and Emergency New Zealand levy costs from July 1 under changes to the levy regime.
Currently, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are charged a levy based on the insured value of the vehicle. Under the existing system, a truck insured for $400,000 attracts an annual FENZ levy of about $478.
From July 1, all vehicles will instead move to a flat $25 levy per unit regardless of vehicle size or value.
The changes are expected to materially reduce levy costs for many heavy vehicle fleets, although operators with predominantly light vehicle fleets may see increases.
Transporting New Zealand says operators renewing insurance policies after July 1 could benefit from lower levy costs depending on fleet composition and renewal timing.
The organisation says some operators may wish to discuss renewal timing with their insurance broker ahead of the new regime taking effect.
Transporting New Zealand also pointed to the latest TNZ/Grant Thornton Transport Cost Index, which showed vehicle insurance costs fell 0.37% between December 2024 and December 2025.
The organisation says the figures highlight the importance of regularly reviewing insurance arrangements and pricing.
Transporting New Zealand members wanting more information about the levy changes, insurance pricing and available member discounts are being encouraged to contact their membership manager for advice on available insurance offerings and discounts from providers.
