Great Wall Motors is announcing it assumes control of its New Zealand and Australian operations on July 1, 2016, pledging continued service for the existing customer base and dealer network.
It has also confirmed its new dual cab utility will be called the Steed when it launches later this year.
Great Wall Motors Australia (GWMA) managing director, Parker Shi, says it was a unanimous decision amongst the local team to go with the name Steed rather than Wingle.
“In the Peoples Republic of China, the Great Wall ute is called Wingle, which translates to ‘horse.’ That’s why it has been called the Steed in the United Kingdom, and this is why we have chosen that name,” says Shi.
“We’re confident the Great Wall Steed will become a new best friend for many farmers and tradesmen,” he says.
The line-up will include three dual cab versions – a 4×4 diesel, 4×2 diesel and 4×2 petrol. Standard safety features will include ESP and six airbags as standard on all three models.
The new Great Wall Steed will go on sale early in Q4.
