Auckland-based Golden Contracting is strengthening its fleet by securing New Zealand’s first-ever 780hp Mack Super-Liner.
Owner Mark ‘Skip’ Golden says he couldn’t be prouder and it aligns with him celebrating 25 years since he bought his first truck.
“When I heard about the 780hp Super-Liner from a conference call, I thought ‘imagine getting the first one off the line for New Zealand?’” Golden says.
“I initialled an agreement without even asking the purchase price.”
Golden’s connection with Mack runs deep, having first added a Mack Trident to his fleet in 2015. Since then, he has remained loyal to the brand.
“This wasn’t just about the horsepower, it’s the conventional look of the Mack,” he says. “It’s a numbered truck, I want it to be remembered.”
Beyond sentiment, he says the business logic is clear.
“I rate trucks by their cents-per-kilometre over their life, and Macks have consistently outperformed in durability, reliability, and fuel efficiency,” he says.
His team also backs the decision, particularly for its mDRIVE automated transmission. “No other transmission gets near it,” Golden added. “It’s so intuitive, it knows exactly when to shift and it’s very smooth on the pedal.”
Golden Contracting works its trucks hard, supporting roading, commercial projects, and rural operations.
“We go into some pretty rough off-road terrain: forestry skid-sites, farm tracks, loose metal, you name it, and the traction and high torque curve on the Macks is ideally suited for this work.
“If I go into some of the rough country up the top of the North Island in a Mack, I know I’m coming home that night, they’re dependable.”
Mack’s support is another reason Golden stays committed.
“Some brands you call about service and they tell you there’s a slot in four weeks. Not with Mack. You can even call reception and you’ll get put straight through to a technician who’ll solve your query.”
Tony O’Connell, vice president of Mack Trucks Australia, called the delivery a proud moment.
“This is a company that understands the true value Mack offers, not just in terms of trucks but the long-term relationships we build.”
With the 780hp Super-Liner now in his fleet, Golden remains focused on performance and growth. “We’ll keep buying them,” he says. “Mack is a big part of us getting it right.”
