Golden Bay Cement has announced it will be among the first in New Zealand to put Hyzon hydrogen-powered trucks into its fleet.

It will receive two of the 600hp, 58 tonne gross combined mass (GCM) tractor units which will be powered by 100% green hydrogen.

The trucks are being supplied and leased from TR Group which has ordered 20 of the trucks for several New Zealand customers with the first units due to arrive around mid-2022 for performance testing with the remainder arriving towards the end of the year.

Golden Bay Cement expects to have its trucks by September and will be part of an effort to lower the carbon footprint across the business. They will prevent approximately around a tonne of CO2 emitted on a daily use.

The trucks have an expected range of 550-600kms depending on weight and terrain.

Initially the company will be trialling the trucks in the Auckland area and says it will assess further expansion as infrastructure for fuelling stations continues to grow.

Golden Bay’s cement industrial general manager Gian Raffainer says it’s “a total privilege” for the company to obtain two of the trucks out of the initial 20 arrivals.

“These trucks will demonstrate how hydrogen can be reliable and how achievable it is to reduced payload compared with a diesel truck.”

Express freight company PBT, Fulton Hogan and Move Logistics Group will also be among the first New Zealand customers to operate the Hyzon trucks.
