A new national fuel tax will be passed on in higher delivery costs, a major freight company says.
A new nationwide fuel tax proposed by the Government this week will see motorists pay up to 9 to 12 cents per litre more at the pump.
Auckland could face a double whammy with an additional regional fuel tax, potentially pushing up petrol prices by 20 cents in the city.
Freightways chief executive Mark Troughear told Stuff.co.nz this would lead to higher costs being passed onto customers.
The company uses pricing mechanism that automatically passes on extra costs in fuel.
“They are going to pay a little bit more for every package that they send.
“I do not think they look at us like the bad guy for it. We are sort of the messenger, don’t shoot the messenger,” Troughear told Stuff.
Freightways owns New Zealand Couriers, Post Haste Couriers, and Now Couriers.
