New Zealand’s fuel stocks have fallen for a second consecutive update but remain within normal levels, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Data collected at 11.59pm on April 12 shows the country has 56.3 days of petrol available, 45.4 days of diesel and 47 days of jet fuel, all down from the previous update on April 8.

MBIE says the decline does “not raise any immediate concerns”, with overall supply remaining stable despite ongoing global disruption.

The latest figures show fuel stocks in-country at 25.3 days of petrol, 20.8 days of diesel and 21.3 days of jet fuel. Additional supply is on the water, including five ships within New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone and seven vessels outside the zone carrying further fuel shipments.

The ministry says recent delays to one shipment were caused by congestion at Singapore, as more vessels use it as a primary loading hub following the closure of export facilities in some countries.

“The fuel companies have confirmed that supply chains continue to operate, although these types of delays are likely to become more common,” MBIE says.

“Fuel stocks naturally rise and fall each week as fuel is used and new shipments arrive. Current fuel levels are broadly in line with normal levels before recent global disruptions, and fuel supply remains normal,” it says.

MBIE says onshore and incoming stocks remain sufficient and there is no need for changes in consumer behaviour.

The next update is scheduled for April 20.
