Emerging technologies and zero-emission transport solutions are topics to be tackled at this year’s Freight Futures 2030 and Fleet Safety conferences.
The two events, hosted by Conferenz, will be co-located over two days at Auckland’s Grand Millennium from June 24 to 25.
Key stakeholders throughout the New Zealand transport industry will join in discussions around the future of the freight sector.
This includes delegates from road, rail, sea and air with insights into global and domestic factors impacting on and affecting New Zealand’s freight environment, while gaining advice on how to create a resilient, efficient and future ready business.
Other key topics include addressing industry-wide workforce shortages and retention concerns and using data to improve a company’s efficiency and business prospects.
New Zealand Defence Force chief of joint defence services Charles Lott and KiwiRail acting chief executive Todd Moyle will be keynote speakers at the event.
Speakers will discuss the Government’s commitment to making New Zealand a carbon-neutral economy by 2050 and how this impacts new investments in areas such as hydrogen fuel cell and electric vehicle technology or in research into other alternative fuels.
On top of this, speakers will be looking into new and sustainable ways of doing business which are needed in a period of low margins while also ensuring the workforce shortage concerns are addressed in a meaningful way.
On the technology side of things, discussions will look at how far the sectors can go in regards to the implementation of smart and autonomous technologies before they become safety and cost implementation issues.
Looking at health and safety, driver fatigue is a major in road accidents but there is also the health and safety of the wider team that needs to be considered.
Questions to be asked include: What measures are in play? How can a safe workplace culture be created? Are fleet drivers in organisations more likely to take risks because they do not own the vehicle? There is a great responsibility for management with such matters and understanding what the implications are when health and safety is breached is of great importance.
A highlight of these events will be a closing address from the New Zealand Defence Force, who in order to share their knowledge on efficiency and logistics expertise with the business sector, will tell their story titled: “The art of movement – from factory to foxhole”. In particular, covering how they have successfully transported people, cargo, and freight, at times on their own and at times in partnership with their valued commercial partners.
These transport and logistics operations have involved movements around New Zealand and around the globe often under great time, geographic and safety pressures in response to calls for natural disaster relief and humanitarian aid or during combat operations far from home.
The story provides lessons on how an organisation can successfully deliver significant freight and logistics operations where short notice and extreme time and environmental constraints prevail.
