Ford New Zealand has issued a safety recall on Ranger models manufactured between March 1, 2016 and July 11, 2018.

The Ford Ranger is New Zealand’s top selling new vehicle and the company says as safety is its priority it’s contacting Ranger customers directly as a precaution to have their vehicle’s front brake hoses replaced, and in a small number of cases, the calipers as well.

The recall is being issued in phases to ensure vehicles more likely to be affected are serviced first, and to ensure adequate supply of parts.

Customers should book their cars for inspection when they receive their recall letter, the repair work free and expected to take less than half a day, Ford says.

The company says the affected Rangers are still safe to drive and it has not issued instructions to stop using the vehicles: “But it is still important that we inspect and repair each vehicle affected”, Stuff reports.

Ford NZ says while it has had no reported incidents here, the symptoms should the hose fail would include a loss of brake fluid, illumination of the brake fluid warning indicator in the instrument cluster, increased brake pedal travel, and extended stopping distances. Rear brakes continue to function normally, it adds.

Ranger owners can call the Ford Customer Service line on 0800 FORD NZ (0800 367 369) with any questions or concerns.
