Two men have been arrested and Police are seeking a third after a fleeing driver was chased by Police for about 40 minutes on the Southern Motorway overnight.

Just after 2am a Police patrol tried to stop a suspected stolen Mitsubishi Canter light truck on the North Shore. The truck failed to stop and was chased South over the Harbour Bridge and onto the Southern Motorway.

The truck traveled at speeds up to 120km/h and near the Mount Wellington interchange the driver attempted to ram a Police car.

Police followed the truck South as far as Drury where it made a U turn on the Motorway and traveled North in the Southbound lanes.

Police closed the Southbound lanes to all traffic at Takanini as a precaution.

The truck, which by this time had lost a front tire and was driving on the rim of the front wheel, was dumped near Walter Strevens Drive and the three occupants fled on foot.

Police officers caught two men shortly afterwards and enquiries to locate the third are continuing.
