The NZ Transport Agency this week confirmed five inspection firms have been offered appointments under the border inspection system.

JEVIC and AutoTerminal Japan offer the services offshore in Japan and JEVIC also in the UK, while only one company, IVS, currently offer inspections in New Zealand since the withdrawal of KMA.

Originally excluded from the first round of approvals, two Transport Service Delivery Agents have been offered appointments this time – Vehicle Testing NZ and Vehicle Inspection NZ – while another independent firm NZ Biosecurity Services has also been approved for services in New Zealand.

Offshore, Toyofuji Shipping NZ and Automotive Technologies NZ are also on the list.

NZTA spokesperson Andy Knackstedt pointed out the five have not yet been officially appointed.

“I can confirm that the five organisations below have been issued with draft notices of appointment – none have yet been officially appointed,” Knackstedt says. “We are waiting to hear back from them to confirm that they wish to formally take up the appointments.”

The appointments were due to be made some months ago, but there had been sticking points over inspection coverage and quality assurance processes. While an ISO standard had been proposed, the agency says the TSDA’s already have systems in place for their current inspection processes, and the others have their own QA processes in place the agency can approve.
