dt2It was a busy January for the DIESELtalk team as we spent two very warm days in the Waikato at the third bi-annual Grasslandz agriculture in action event, which graces four pages of this issue and brings you a flavour of what was on offer from exhibitors and industry providers.

We have our usual round up of professional op-ed columns from interested industry parties, and this month Auckland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Michael Barnett, joins Road Transport Forum chief executive Ken Shirley and Industry Training Federation chief executive Josh Williams.

Despite the doom and gloom projected by the drop in the farm gate milk solids payout for the dairy industry, other sectors within New Zealand are booming, particularly construction and infrastructure. Local economic confidence is reflected by more investment in new truck dealerships, new shipping wharves, new technology for fleet management and a focus on growing the number of apprenticeships within industry as reported here.

We also take a test drive off-road in the new diesel-powered Toyota Fortuner SUV, and then on-road in an Iveco Daily with a very bossy satellite navigation system.

In this issue:

  • Southpac Trucks expanding in Waikato
  • Lyttelton prepares for huge freight increase
