Thousands of farmers and contractors are owed money on fuel used by off-road farm vehicles, and are urged to make a claim before they miss out.
An average dairy farmer who spends $5000 per annum on off-road petrol will get an excise duty refund of $2900 per annum.
Almost any commercial off-road fuel usage includes an on-road tax (or duty) of up to $0.58 cents/litre that can be refunded back to the user.
Fuel duty refunds can be backdated for up to two years and the refund can be quite significant, however the process to obtain a refund is complex and applications will be rejected if they are not correctly presented.
The NZ Industrial Fuel Duty Agency (NZIFDA) provide an entitlement guide online at nzifda.org.
If eligible, farmers can open an account with NZIFDA (this costs $55 +GST) and lodge a claim. From here, NZIFDA’s staff will gather the information needed to support a claim and file that claim with the NZTA.
NZTA pays NZIFDA directly and claims are paid out on the 5th of each month following, less the NZIFDA processing fee of 12.5%+GST.
