Exciting new building for Auckland’s waterfront

An exciting new building is scheduled for Auckland’s waterfront, designed by Plus Architecture.

Ports of Auckland’s new car handling building is a community park project, on the inside specially designed with ramps to every floor to take up cars as they come off ships. These cars are held out of sight for a couple of days for processing, before being taken away for storage.

Building up means there will be more space for car handling and using land more intensively.

This is one of the part’s 30-year mater plan projects which will help create room on the waterfront for a new cruise ship terminal on Captain Cook wharf.

A rooftop waterfront park will support Aucklander’s desire for more waterfront green space. Ports of Auckland say no other port in the world has such a feature.

“We listened to what our stakeholders and Aucklanders want and need from the port. Vehicle importers need more room for growing volumes and Aucklanders want a better looking waterfront with more public space,” says Ports of Auckland’s chief executive Tony Gibson.

“We asked Plus Architecture to design a building that meets those two potentially conflicting needs, and I think they’ve come up with a winner. The new building is operationally functional, but it also fits well within the city and waterfront landscapes and create some new amenities.”

The building will be 110m long, 70m wide and 17m high, with a capacity of up to 1700 vehicles.

The main elements of the building will be complete by late 2020, with the rooftop park to be completed in a second phase of the project.
