Greater Wellington Regional Councillor Paul Bruce got behind the wheel of New Zealand’s battery electric rubbish truck at the recent Energise Õtaki event.
Wellington is looking to scrap their electric trolley buses, and Bruce’s experience behind the wheel has shown him that electric is a sustainable future for Wellington City Transport.
The ZEV 9000 New Zealand manufactured truck, owned and operated by the Kapiti Coast District Council, has been on the road for over two years and has travelled over 50,000kms in that time.
“The truck proves the concept and the maturity of heavy electric vehicles,” says Andrew Rushworth, Managing Director of Zero Emission Vehicles, the Palmerston North-based company that designed and built the truck.
“The ZEV 9000 drive and power systems are part of a common platform used on all ZEV trucks and buses up to 25 tonnes gross weight.”
