Replacement of the Horoera Bailey bridge leading to the historic East Cape light house commences today.Transport Minister Simon Bridges says it the first of three transport projects in the Gisborne-Tairāwhiti region due for completion.
“It will be replaced by a single-lane concrete bridge in a four-day operation from July 24,” says Bridges.
The $400,000 project is the first in a $1.5 million package of three, fully Crown-funded roading projects announced in February at the release of the Tairāwhiti Economic Action Plan (He Huarahi Hei Whai Oranga).
“The new bridge will support high productivity motor vehicles and boost the resilience of the route,” says Bridges.
Tairāwhiti Roads, which is a partnership between the NZ Transport Agency and Gisborne District Council is delivering the project.
The section of East Cape Road from the bridge to the lighthouse will close on July 26 for four days while a crane puts the new bridge into place.
Vehicles will be able to use the bridge from 9:00 am on July 28, and the project will manage its full completion over the following three weeks with minimum inconvenience to traffic.
