Transport minister Gerry Brownlee has signed into law changes under the Vehicle Licensing Reform that confirm an extension to variable frequency Certificates of Fitness, along side changes to the Warrant of Fitness system.

From July 1, 2014, some operators will be eligible to have a CoF applied from a range of three to 12 months, increased from the current three to nine months.

The default frequency will remain at six months.

The NZ Transport Agency says it will continue to work with vehicle inspection industry stakeholders on plans to introduce the new system – this includes a proposal to open up the CoF market to other players, including repairers.

NZ Transport Agency spokesperson Andy Knackstedt reiterated to DIESELtalk today that there will be a wider range of options in the market for inspections.

“The decision to open up the CoF market to provide for a greater range of service options has been made,” Knackstedt says. “The NZ Transport Agency is now reviewing its service delivery model to give effect to this decision.

“This includes reviewing policies for assessing applications from potential service providers, the requirements applied to service providers, and monitoring and auditing processes.’

Knackstedt says he expects the process to be completed in November.
