The next steps have been taken in Auckland Council’s plans to relocate the Ports of Auckland.
That’s despite uncertainty about where moving Auckland’s port operations to Northport fits in with Winston Peters’ coalition negotiations.
Auckland Council’s planning committee is calling for more information on costs involved with moving the port and current operational constraints.
“Based on Ernst and Young’s findings, the existing port will not be able to accommodate the long term freight task and cruise on the current footprint,” the committee’s documents reveal.
The move is part of a wider review of Auckland’s waterfront, including ferry infrastructure and extra public space.
Alternative locations include Muriwai, Kawakawa Bay and several spots in the Manukau Harbour.
A proposal by councillor Christine Fletcher to put off the decision until the next government is formed was defeated in an eight-nine vote.
