A Christchurch earthworks contractor who made headlines earlier this year after tearing up a supermarket carpark over non-payment has won his case for payment.
The High Court has released a judgement ordering Pera Te Amo be paid more than $300,000 for materials and work put into the supermarket carpark.
Te Amo destroyed the work because he had not been paid by lead contractor Watts and Hughes Construction – the court deciding that the company should not have withheld the payment.
Te Amo told TV3 he’d like to see a commitment from politicians to tighten the rules in the Construction Contracts Act so that sub-contractors have to be paid before lead contractors, or where money is held in trust.
He still faces criminal charges as a result of threats exchanged in the heat of the dispute.
