As well as the popular show ‘n’ shine competition where more than 300 trucks are expected to line up, Trucking 2016 will introduce some new events at the Wigram Air Force Museum on October 8.
The older Kiwi tradition of using canvas tarpaulins and ropes to cover a load on the back of a flat deck truck is making a come-back at Trucking 2016, in the form of a competition to see which driver can do it the most quickly and the most neatly.
“We are going to recreate history, using a 36-year-old Kenworth four axle B-train truck to see who can cover its load of cargo with a canvas tarpaulin in the quickest and neatest fashion,” says NZ Trucking chief executive Dave Boyce.
NZ Trucking board member and STL Linehaul managing director Shane Pearson is organising the ‘tarping’ competition, and he reckons it will be more of a challenge for the younger drivers who may not have used such methods before.
“It will be interesting to see how they handle the ropes,” says Pearson.
There will also be more than 20 trade stand exhibitors representing all facets of the transport industry at the Wigram-based function.
Other events at Trucking 2016 will include the Canterbury Excavator Competition, which Civil Contractors New Zealand is running, and for aspiring junior excavator drivers also wanting to have a go, Doug the Digger will also be making an appearance with Mr. Mac in charge.
There will also be a Kids Zone, Scooter Roadway, and a Tyre Pit for families to enjoy as well as the growing number of trucks in the Show ‘n’ Shine competition.
The event will finish with a dinner and charity auction at the Museum Hall at 7 pm for more than 700 people, which Boyce says is providing a great networking opportunity for members of the transport industry and their families to enjoy.
Entry to Trucking 2016 on October 8 is by gold coin donation, with all proceeds from the entry fee and charity auction going to Ronald McDonald House Canterbury and the Child Cancer Foundation.
