Calls have gone out for a safer route to be made available for large, and fuel carrying, trucks to travel from the Port of Lyttleton, following another truck crash on Friday.
Such vehicles are forced to take Governors Bay road to exit the port since Sumner Road was closed after the 2011 earthquake -and it is not expected to reopen until 2015.
In the latest incident, a truck carrying a 65-tonne digger toppled over while travelling at just 15km/h – the driver suggesting it was because of the significant camber in the road.
Lyttleton port boss Peter Davie told The Press it wants to see Sumner Road open as soon as possible – and has been working with the council.
“”We’ve been working with the council on that for a period of time,” he says. “From our point of view, it is the council’s responsibility. We’d like it to move forward.”
Davie considered the Sumner route to be the safest for oversize vehicles and petrol tankers.
