For the operators and fleet managers who keep the Waikato moving, every decision comes back to the same thing: keeping trucks on the road and out of the workshop for as long as possible.
CAL Group has built its business around that understanding. And with the opening of its new Te Rapa workshop facility, the company has made its most significant investment yet in delivering on it.
The new facility is one of the most advanced truck service workshops in the Waikato region – purpose-built for the demands of modern commercial fleet operations. Multiple service lanes, specialist diagnostic equipment, dedicated inspection capability, an expanded parts operation, and a team of experienced technicians combine to create a facility where scale and precision work together rather than against each other.
For CAL Group managing director Ashok Parbhu, the new workshop reflects a long-held commitment.
“This facility is a physical expression of what we mean when we say you can count on us to keep you moving,” he says.
“It’s the region’s most advanced truck service facility, staffed by some of the country’s best technicians, and it’s open for any truck – not just Isuzus.”
That point is one worth emphasising. CAL Isuzu is New Zealand’s number one Isuzu dealer – and Isuzu is New Zealand’s number one selling truck – but the workshop, like much of the broader CAL business, is built to service all makes and models.
Fleet operators running mixed fleets will find the same capability and commitment regardless of what’s on the hoist. Workshop, parts, finance and engineering work together to support customers across the full life of their vehicles – a business model designed to be useful at every point in the relationship, not just at the point of sale.
The Te Rapa development sits within a broader investment programme that extends well beyond Hamilton. CAL Group has significant site development planned across the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Auckland and Northland – a long-term build-out that reinforces the group’s national ambitions and its commitment to consistency of service across regions.
“Every investment we make strengthens the same model,” says Parbhu.
“Sales, service, engineering, parts, finance and compliance working together, so that wherever a customer is and whatever they need, CAL can deliver. Te Rapa is a landmark in that journey, but it’s part of a much bigger picture.”
CAL and VTNZ: Inspect, repair, reinspect all in one place
The most significant development within the new facility is one that represents a genuine first – the integration of a fully operational VTNZ inspection lane directly within the workshop. Operators can now have their Certificate of Fitness inspection, any required rectification work, and reinspection all completed in a single visit, without moving the vehicle off site.
The practical value is obvious for truck and fleet owners. The COF process has always carried the risk of a fail leading to unplanned delays – finding a workshop, waiting for repairs, returning for reinspection. At CAL Te Rapa, that sequence happens within the one facility. And the VTNZ inspectors operating within it do so with full independence, ensuring the integrity of every inspection and reinspection is maintained.
This partnership between CAL Isuzu and VTNZ is the first of its kind in New Zealand, and it reflects a relationship built over more than 25 years.
“VTNZ and CAL share a long history and a common purpose,” says Parbhu.
“We both understand that compliance and capability need to work together. Bringing VTNZ into this facility is the natural next step in a relationship built on trust – and on putting the customer first.”
For VTNZ, the integration makes the compliance process work better for operators and for the wider system. Findings are addressed immediately, reinspection follows without delay, and the independence of the process is never in doubt.
The new CAL Isuzu Te Rapa workshop is open now, servicing all truck makes and models. COF inspections through the integrated VTNZ lane can be booked as part of a full service visit.
