Reinforcement work is being carried out on Tukituki Bridge in the Hawke’s Bay to allow for larger trucks and more freight.
The NZ Transport Agency is undertaking the maintenance on the State Highway 2 bridge with McNatty Construction. Work got underway on February 1.
NZTA regional transport systems manager Wayne Oldfield says the project is about creating more efficiency on the roads.
“This work will enable SH2 south to be opened up to high productivity motor vehicles, effectively meaning more freight on fewer trucks,” he says.
Traffic management is in place with stop/go signs and a 30 kilometre speed limit.
Two lanes will be available to traffic during daytime hours of 6 am and 6 pm, however this will be reduced to a single lane after 6 pm and remain in place overnight.
To ensure the contractor is able to complete the work, overweight and over dimension vehicles have been provided with two weekly designated time periods in which they can cross.
The works includes strengthening using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) strips to the underside of the beams and concrete repairs.
