Commercial transport operators are likely to bear the brunt of Auckland’s regional fuel tax, according to the city’s mayor Phil Goff.
The tax will replace an interim transport levy that Auckland ratepayers have been paying since 2015 to cover a shortfall in transport infrastructure funding.
“The commercial sector will pay a large sector of that [regional fuel tax] because they’re using the roads most,” he told the AM show.
Goff says he’s not a fan of the interim transport levy.
“A pensioner in Pakuranga was paying the same levy as a commercial company with a fleet of trucks on the road seven days a week,” he says.
“You can’t get unfairer than that.”
The regional fuel tax, which is predicted to be 11.5 centre per litre, is likely to be in place by July, according to the government.
