Auckland Airport is changing plans for its new northern runway by locating it further north, also making it longer than initially proposed.
According to the New Zealand Herald, Auckland Airport planning manager Kellie Roland says the original runway proposal in 2000 to use the new Northern runway for domestic flights “has been flipped on its head.”
The airport company is repositioning the new runway some 72 metres further north to accommodate wide-body F-Code aircraft such as the Airbus A-380. It will measure just under 3km in length.
Auckland Airport wants to start work on the 2983m Northern runway in 2018 to meet the 2028 deadline, which is when it expects the current southern runway to be running at full capacity.
The airport company is preparing for a new round of hearings to have the new plans approved for this project reports the New Zealand Herald.
