AT launches pre-summer pothole blitz

Auckland Transport has relaunched its pre-summer Pothole Promise campaign, urging Aucklanders to report road defects so crews can repair them quickly ahead of the holiday rush.

AT says 95% of potholes reported on arterial and other high-volume regional roads will be repaired within 24 hours, with all other sealed roads fixed within five working days. It is also asking people to include a photo when lodging a report to help crews locate and assess damage more efficiently.

“Last year our contractors repaired more than 6,000 potholes across the region and we are committed to repairing them as quickly as possible,” AT group manager for road asset maintenance and renewals Alan Wallace says.

“Potholes form when water seeps into cracks in the road surface, weakening the pavement underneath and Auckland’s high rainfall and aging road network make potholes a recurring challenge.”

Wallace says longer, drier days in October and November are ideal for a bigger repair push, and extra funding from Auckland Council and the Government is allowing more preventative work such as resurfacing.

“We’re asking Aucklanders to help us keep roads safe by reporting potholes when they see them — and if you can, please include a photo,” he says.

“Photos make a big difference in helping our crews find the exact location and understand the severity of the pothole. We’re also now asking for an email address when you report a pothole. This means we can follow up if the location isn’t clear — and let you know once it’s been fixed.”

AT’s campaign runs from October 20 to November 16 and targets repairs across the 1,400km arterial and regional road network carrying more than 10,000 vehicles a day.

Over summer 2024/25, AT resurfaced 427km of roads and plans to increase that over the next three years.
