The ANZ Truckometer shows overall June traffic volumes almost back to last year’s levels with the heavy traffic index up 14.5% for the month while light traffic was up 28%.
Light traffic on the weekend remains the weakest type of travel compared to a year ago, despite calls to embark on domestic tourist adventures.
The heavy and light traffic indexes usually reflect economic activity, however the lockdown period has broken the link between light traffic and GDP in particular.
The month of June included eight days of level 2 lockdown and 22 days of level 1.
The Truckometer is now looking at how traffic has changed in the different levels of lockdown.
The different traffic types have taken different routes depending on how “essential” they are, but all have now converged back to just slightly under year-ago levels.
“Relative to the impact of lockdown, current differences look negligible, but they matter,” ANZ says.

Is this a national statistic? I’ve heard a lot of people in Wellington are still working from home so would have thought the light traffic Mon-Fri would still be slightly depressed.
Can you please provide a link to the underlying traffic data?
Thanks.
Hi Lou, yes it’s a national statistic and it’s a month-on-month report.I’ve added a table comparing levels to the same period last year which shows traffic volume is still down slightly. Thanks, Nigel
