Alexander Group rolls out dual-fuel hydrogen truck

Alexander Group NZ is celebrating what it calls a “huge milestone” in the shift toward cleaner freight transport, with its first dual-fuel hydrogen truck now officially on the road.

The dual fuel hydrogen truck hit the road last week for its maiden voyage on the Ingham’s Waitoa Free Range chicken run, the company says.

Built on a CF85 DAF 6×4 tractor, the truck uses dual-fuel technology to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining the flexibility of diesel operation.

The system enables the truck to run on both hydrogen and diesel, and switches to 100% diesel when hydrogen is unavailable –– making it a practical transitional solution for fleets as hydrogen refuelling infrastructure continues to roll out.

“This is a big leap toward a cleaner, more sustainable transport future. We’re incredibly proud to partner with Inghams Group Limited and TR Group to help lead the charge for greener transport solutions,” the company added.

The milestone marks one of the first deployments of dual-fuel hydrogen technology on New Zealand roads and signals growing industry collaboration on low-emission transport.

Heavy vehicle leasing specialist TR Group worked alongside CH2NGE Fuel Technologies (a division of H.W. Richardson Group) to develop the dual-fuel truck.

According to TR Group, the technology can reduce emissions by up to 40% without compromising performance.

“While these are not zero emission, we believe we should not let perfect get in the way of better,” TR Group says.
