“Our linehaul units are delayed due to an accident resulting in the closure of the Desert Road, we will keep you updated as information becomes available,” says Fastway Couriers.

“We also wish to advise that snow is now falling on the Desert Road which may cause further delays,” it says.

The company website says that all efforts will be made to get freight delivered as soon as possible.

Fastway Couriers Hawke’s Bay spokesman Dave France told Stuff that in the South Island closed roads have interrupted freight shipments.

He says that four trucks including two bound for the North Island were waiting at a closed road checkpoint hoping to get on the last scheduled Cook Strait ferry crossing before sailings suspend due to weather.

France reckoned that freight from Queenstown was expected to be delivered to Christchurch in the afternoon if Dunedin roads reopened.

However, he says that trucks bound for Nelson, Blenheim and the North Island were waiting at a checkpoint at Lewis Pass.

France told Stuff “It would be touch and go.” for the freight to make the crossing before Cook Strait ferry sailings suspend.
