5km/h truck speed limit to be enforced

Nationwide speed cameras will have a speed tolerance of just 5km/h for all heavy and towing vehicles over Labour Weekend, beginning at 4pm on October 19.

This tolerance has been in place since 2004 when the open road limit for heavy vehicles was increased to 90km/h, However, older speed cameras were unable to differentiate between types of vehicles.

Enforcement was previously carried out by police officers on the road – however, the older-style cameras have been replaced, and police say the tolerance will now be strictly enforced.

While this will have no impact on the majority of the safety conscious heavy motor vehicle industry, this technology will assist in bringing down the mean speeds of heavy and towing motor vehicles, which is of benefit to all road users.
