ITS technology is increasingly embedded in transport infrastructure and vehicles, assisting drivers and businesses as well as transport planners and traffic operations centres to improve efficiencies and safety, including world-leading examples on New Zealand’s roads.

The ITS Asia Pacific Forum will attract government representatives, technology experts as well as transport infrastructure and planning professionals.

The event’s theme – ‘Safety, Choices, Opportunities, Results, Efficiencies’ (SCORE) will focus on technology advances that will improve transport systems, including ‘connected cars’.

More than 80 specialist papers will be delivered over 20 sessions by local and international ITS experts from Europe, the United States, and Asia, including Taiwan, Korea and Japan.

Some of the more notable topics include:

* The emergence of self-learning smartphone applications understanding personal travel habits, pushing personalised traffic information to the user.

* Transport management centres use of static and probabilistic computer learning techniques to assist operators to analyse increasing volumes of information when managing incidents.

* An overview of Japan’s co-operative ‘ITS Spot’, a communications service launched in 2011 with over 1600 roadside sensors and transmitters and 150,000 users.

* The use of electronic registration identifiers, particularly the current products and deployments in Europe.

The event is hosted by ITS NZ which provides leadership in the promotion, development and facilitation of intelligent transportation systems in New Zealand, to achieve a sustainable, effective, efficient, safe and environmentally-friendly multi-modal transportation system.
