Ports of Auckland has released its 2020 annual results showing a COVID-19 impact with net profit down. However, the port still managed some exciting milestones and the opening of a new dedicated car handling facility plus the coming arrival of full automation and the world’s first electric tug are signs of a bright outlook.

Major deals have been reached within the bus industry including a new three-year collective agreement between NZ Bus and unions for Auckland drivers plus a new living wage deal implemented by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for drivers nationwide.

TransportTalk has also started a series on sustainability and innovation as we hear from companies and organisations that are leading the way in reducing transport emissions. In the first feature we hear from the Ministry of Transport about its Green Freight project and Toll Group’s work on the Sustainable Business Council.

In this issue, we also report on the New Zealand trucking industry’s efforts in stepping up to raise mental health awareness for the wellbeing of drivers and all the teams around them.

The initiative is being promoted by all corners of the freight community and even rugby legend and mental health ambassador Sir John Kirwan is giving a helping hand to the cause.

Plus, MITO launches a free micro-credential for a career in the automotive industry, Guardian Angel managing director Petra Hakansson talks about staff health and safety and we test drive the Ford plug-in hybrid version of its popular Transit Custom van.

And don’t forget to take a look at our regular columns and statistics pages that keep you up-to-date with the latest industry trends.
