Maersk lifts NZ intermodal fuel fee amid global energy pressure

Shipping and logistics giant A.P. Moller – Maersk has increased its intermodal fuel fee in New Zealand by 27% from May 1, as rising global energy prices continue to impact transport costs.

The adjustment follows the introduction of a temporary Intermodal Fuel Fee (EFS/IFS) on March 16, which Maersk says is aimed at reflecting higher fuel costs across landside and intermodal transport operations.

The company says the increase is being driven by volatility in global energy markets, linked in part to the security situation in the Middle East and its effect on fuel supply.

With around 20% of global fuel shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz, recent developments have created what Maersk describes as an “unprecedented cost environment” for logistics providers.

The surcharge applies to landside transportation, including inland and intermodal services, and is designed to help maintain service continuity, protect cargo integrity and ensure sufficient vendor capacity across the network.

Maersk says the fee will be reviewed monthly in line with fuel costs and broader market conditions, with further adjustments possible if volatility persists.

The company says it remains committed to supporting customers through the current environment, while acknowledging the impact of rising costs on supply chains.
