Shipping company Toyofuji has halted shipping used electric vehicles other than the Nissan Leaf, although only under specific conditions.
In a notice released late last year, the company explained customers must now meet stricter guidelines before their vehicles can be shipped.
Under the new requirements, used BEVs must have no damage to the main lithium battery or the vehicle’s underbody, and the state of charge must be at least 20%.
The shipping company also requires an onboard diagnostics (OBD) check before loading to ensure minimal voltage differences between cells.
Within specified time frames, a “Letter of Guarantee” and “Battery Condition Report” must also be submitted.
Under these updated rules, only the Nissan Leaf is currently accepted. They will take effect for any vessel commencing its voyage on or after February 1, 2025.
Toyofuji was the last major shipping line to carry all used EV models. Others withdrew in 2022 following a significant car carrier fire. Japan operated Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) was among firms which halted shipments of used electric vehicles.
