New opportunities await Gough Group chief executive Karl Smith who will vacate the position at the end of the year.

Smith has lead the heavy equipment provider since 2008 through the Global Financial Crisis and Christchurch earthquakes, the NBR reports.

Both events were equally challenging, though the earthquakes took more of an emotional toll, he says.

Group majority owner and deputy board chairman Ben Gough told the NBR Smith effected a significant turnaround in the business.

“The past few months have seen the highest monthly sales for the group in our 85-year history and we now have the strongest order bank for more than 10 years under his leadership. We will sorely miss him.”

Smith is also a Ports of Auckland independent director.
