Seven vehicles have been award five-star ANCAP safety ratings today.
Among them is Toyota’s new Fortuner, the Ford Everest SUV and Volvo’s new XC90.
The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has also given the updated Ford Ranger MKII, Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series, Volkswagen Passat and Lexus’s IS five stars
“It is encouraging to see more five-star ANCAP safety rated vehicles being released into the Australian and New Zealand markets giving consumers greater choice when buying a new vehicle,” said new ANCAP boss James Goodwin.
One of the key selling points of the Volvo XC90 and Lexus IS is that both have Autonomous Electronic Braking (AEB) fitted as standard across all variants.
“We urge new car buyers to ask for this potentially life-saving technology when looking for a new vehicle,” Goodwin says.
“Five star ratings for both the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest demonstrates the increasing safety focus in the off-road SUV marketplace.”
The overall points rating for all seven models is 35.98 out of 37 for the Ford Everest (all variants) 33.95 out of 37 for the Toyota Fortuner (all variants), 35.89 out of 37 for the Volkswagen Passat (all variants – sedan and wagon), 33.09 out of 37 for the Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series (all LC200 variants), 36.72 out of 37 for the Ford Ranger MKII (all variants), and 35 out of 37 for the Lexus IS (IS 250, IS350, IS 300h, and IS 200t variants).
There was no overall rating for the Volvo XC90.
“The proportion of models achieving a 5 star ANCAP safety rating has gradually increased from zero in 2002 to 77% of rated models on sale today,”adds Goodwin.
